If there’s one thing we’ve seen from Billy Corgan’s musical career, it’s that the man is not afraid of covering a song. Whether it was covering Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Landslide’, Thin Lizzy’s ‘Dancing In The Moonlight’, or even Depeche Mode’s ‘Never Let Me Down Again’, the Smashing Pumpkins frontman knew how to make a song his own. However, we never thought we would see Miley Cyrus’ name added to that list.
As Alternative Nation have pointed out, Billy Corgan (sorry, William Patrick Corgan, as he’s now known) performed a concert at the Elizabeth Theatre in Toronto, Canada on Friday night, and threw in a rather surprising cover.
Yes, in amongst the 31 song(!) set that contained new tracks, Smashing Pumpkins tunes, and even a Zwan tune, Billy Corgan delivered a couple of covers, including Miley Cyrus’ 2013 hit ‘Wrecking Ball’. The strangest part about it though? It was actually surprisingly good.
Yes, William Patrick Corgan’s acoustic version of the track manages to skirt the same level of emotion that Miley threw into it a few years ago, and despite a few audience members sharing some awkward laughter throughout the whole song, the cover turns out to be one that will definitely be talked about for some time to come.
In addition to his cover of ‘Wrecking Ball’, Corgan also pulled out another couple of covers for the marathon set, including Tim Hardin’s ‘If I Were A Carpenter’, and Neil Young’s ‘After The Gold Rush’. Sadly, those covers aren’t quite up to the same standard as Corgan’s ‘Wrecking Ball’ was.
William Patrick Corgan is currently out on tour in support of new record, Ogilala. While there aren’t any Aussie tour dates on the horizon just yet, his new silent movie, Pillbox, will be hitting up Sydney’s Golden Age Cinema tomorrow night, for one night only. Get in quick though, it’s bound to be a popular event!
