The voice of nineties grunge band The Screaming Trees, Mark Lanegan has carved a unique path throughout his career. Blues Funeral sees the man in fine form. A voice that sounds like it comes from the centre of the Earth.

Having flirted with many forms and genres of music throughout his career, that sense of experimentation really shines through on this release, whether it be the growling blues of ‘The Gravedigger’s Song’ or the electro backbeat of ‘Ode To Sad Disco’, which wouldn’t sound out of place on a Daft Punk record.

Lanegen creates some truly haunting work on Blues Funeral. One can almost picture him sharing a bottle of bourbon with some of the blues masters of old simply by listening to this compelling release.

‘Bleeding Muddy Water’ and ‘Leviathan’ are absolute standouts on a very strong release.
