As reported by Tone Deaf last week the handwritten lyrics to Bob Dylan’s “The Time They Are a-Changing” have gone on sale at auction house Sotheby’s and fetched $422,500 to hedge-fund trader Adam Sender.

This exceeded Sotheby’s estimate that the document, a ripped page out of a notebook, would fetch around $300,000. But it falls well short of the sale earlier this year of The Beatles lyrics sheet for “A Day In The Life” which doubled estimates when it sold for $1.2 million in New York last June.

Sotheby’s Senior Vice President told Rolling Stone “I’ll be perfectly frank — I think we could have pushed the estimate up a bit. No Dylan lyric has ever sold for this much, but no Dylan lyric of this stature has ever come up for auction.”
