The legendary songs of Bob Dylan are set to be reimagined in Australia, with the musical Girl From The North Country headed to our shores.
The musical, which has already visited Broadway and West End, will debut at newly-refurbished Theatre Royal in Sydney in January 2022 as part of the next Sydney Festival. The show features music from Dylan’s catalog, including ‘The Times They Are A Changin’’
“Our journey from The Old Vic in London to the West End in London and onto Broadway has been monumental, and now as part of the reopening in Sydney of the Theatre Royal,” said writer and director Conor McPherson.
“We have managed to find an incredible Australian cast and we can’t wait to bring this magical production to life.”
Australian actors that have been confirmed to be performing in the musical include Lisa McCune, Zahra Newman, Terence Crawford, Peter Carroll and Helen Dallimore.
Girl From North County began on Broadway on Girl Friday, February 7, 2020 at the Belasco Theatre but was shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The story follows American life in 1934. It sees a man with a sick wife who’s struggling with debt. The arrival of a priest and a boxer are a turning point for the story.

A story of American life in 1934 Minnesota, it centres on a community living on a knife-edge in the local guesthouse: the owner, Nick, owes more money than he can ever repay, his wife Elizabeth’s mind is slowly deteriorating, and their daughter Marianne is carrying a child no-one will account for. And, when a preacher selling bibles, and a boxer looking for a comeback turn up in the middle of the night, things start to spiral beyond the point of no return.
