The Killers’ frontman Brandon Flowers has developed something of an outspoken streak lately, which comes, coincidentally enough, just as he’s busy promoting his latest solo album.
However, instead of simply making inflammatory statements or just knocking other celebrities (y’know, the usual tactics employed by headline-hungry musicians), Flowers has just been saying incredibly stupid things.
First, he nearsightedly suggested more bands should be sued for plagiarism, despite the fact that he’s openly admitted to bitting a bass line from David Bowie, amid near-constant accusations of plagiarism against his band.
But now, he’s gone beyond the pale and actually suggested that The Killers are the best band of the last 15 years. The comments, which he gave during a recent interview with The Independent, have to be read to be believed.
“Whether the people want to accept it or not, we might be the best band in the last long time! I’d go up any night against just about any band that’s come out in the last 15 years,” the frontman declared.
“Not that it’s a competition, but I do feel sometimes people don’t have a grasp on what we’ve accomplished and what we’ve acquired,” he clarified. “Everyone should come see The Killers! We’re more than just a new wave revival thing.”
Now, declaring a band as “the best” is obviously a subjective thing. Everyone has a band they think of as “the best” and to actually quantify a best band would be difficult and could rely on any number of criteria.
That said, we can state pretty conclusively that The Killers are not the best band of the last 15 years. We’re not saying they’re the worst, but seriously Brandon, get a grip, mate.
Much like his comments about copyright litigation, Flowers’ latest declaration sort of contradicts comments he previously made. In this case, comments he made only a matter of weeks ago.
As Stereogum notes, Flowers recently told NME that he wants to make another Killers album because their last LP, Battle Born, “wasn’t good enough” and “we all know it”. Considering the Killers only have four albums, that’s one fourth of their catalog.
Surprisingly though, Flowers’ assessment of the band that made him a star isn’t actually the most ridiculous thing he’s said on his most recent publicity trail. Hell, it’s not even the most ridiculous thing he said in that interview.
“I have a Ziploc bag full of hair”, Flowers revealed to The Independent, for some reason. “I’ll grow five or six days growth, make sure that the sink is dry, use an electric razor, catch it in the sink, and then I’m able to just scoop it into the bag!”

He recounted how he became a serial killer began collecting his hair after shaving off the beard and moustache that he sported during The Killers’ Sam’s Town tour back in 2008.
“It’s a lot of hair!” he added. “But it’s compacted. And it doesn’t smell. It’s all black but about half way up you start to see some greys. I don’t know what to do with it yet. It means something.”
We have no idea what a Ziploc bag full of your own hair could possibly mean and we don’t really want to know either. Instead, we’re going to just sit here and think of all the bands to emerge in the last 15 years who are better than The Killers.
