Former Westlife singer and now Aussie resident Brian McFadden, AKA Delta Goodrem’s fiancé, has found himself involved in a shitstorm over his new single ‘Just The Way You Are (Drunk At The Bar), with outraged music fans and critics slamming it for encouraging date rape. With lyrics such as “I like you just the way you are / Drunk as sh*t dancing at the bar . . . I can’t wait to get you home so we can do some damage,” the creepy song has many up in arms and his record company Universal has been forced to cancel a video shoot for the single as they try to hose down the controversy.
McFadden has taken to twitter to defend the song, saying “my new song is a tongue in cheek song about how i find it cute when my girl [fiancée Delta Goodrem] gets drunk… i am not promoting date-rape” continuing, “what’s the next thing i am going to be labeled as from things i say. super intelligent reaction to my song. wish i was as clever as them” followed by, “and yes it is dumb lyrics and a dumb beat…. that was the point!!!! when did i ever claim to be john lennon?” Damn straight he’s not. He’s backtracked and asked radio not to play the song and stated that he’ll be donating all profits from the single to charity as he is “sick that my single is getting so much attention for the wrong reason.”
While the lyrics are questionable to say the least, equally concerning is the complete and utter shitfulness of the track. Like the bastard offspring of Rednex’s ‘Cotton Eye Joe,’ the banjo infused tribute to Autotune must be one of the worst songs to have been released in a long time. If your ears are brave enough, have a listen to it here.
