The mere mention of nu-metal undoubtedly conjures up images of wallet chains, cargo shorts, and angry lyrics backed by dissonant, distorted guitars and pounding drums, and understandably so. However, have you ever wondered just how nu-metal came to be, and what it was that inspired it?
Yes, ahead of Limp Bizkit’s upcoming visit to Australia as part of the inaugural Download Festival, we’ve decided to take a look back at the history of nu-metal, looking at some of the bands that made the whole style of music as huge as it is today.
With bands like Slipknot, Korn, and Limp Bizkit all seeing success at the end of the ’90s, it was only a few years earlier that the nu-metal genre began to emerge, with Korn’s self-titled 1994 record being considered one of the most seminal albums of the era.
Inspired by the likes of Rage Against The Machine’s mixing of metal and rap, Pantera’s groove-metal stylings, and the general chameleon-like style of Faith No More frontman Mike Patton, nu-metal was a composite of various genres, all coming together to make something that appeared to be so fresh and exhilarating.
Limp Bizkit are set to hit up Australia in a week for some seriously awesome sideshows in addition to performing at Download Festival in Melbourne on March 24th. Tickets to both Download Festival and the sideshows are available now, so be sure to grab your ticket to see one hell of a nu-metal gig which also includes Of Mice & Men and Ocean Grove on the bill. While we wait though, be sure to check out our full history of nu-metal below.
