Bruno Mars will star in and produce a new film for Disney, after months of discussion between the two parties. It’s been reported that the film will feature multiple original songs written and performed by Mars.

Disney is remaining coy on the film’s plot and title, but Deadline revealed that the film will be “music-themed”. Details of the film’s co-stars and creative team have not yet been released.

No stranger to the big screen

The film will be Mars’ third acting role. He first appeared onscreen in 1992 as a child, playing an Elvis impersonator in the Nicolas Cage film Honeymoon In Vegas. He also voiced Roberto in Rio 2, alongside a cast that included fellow musicians will.i.am and Jemaine Clement.

Mars’ new movie deal follows news of Disney’s plans to produce a Hamilton musical in 2021. The Hamilton deal, reportedly worth $75 million, will see Disney film a Broadway performance of the critically acclaimed musical. Both the Hamilton and Bruno Mars deals were overseen by Walt Disney Studio’s production president, Sean Bailey. It’s believed that the Disney film group’s President of Music, Mitchell Leib, also played a role in actioning the Bruno Mars film deal.

The film deal comes off the back of what was a relatively quiet 2019 for Mars. Rather than releasing solo material himself, Mars put out two notable collaborations throughout the year.

2019 was a fairly quiet year for Bruno Mars

First, Mars and Cardi B teamed up to release “Please Me” in February. The single peaked at number 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and at number 22 in Australia. Mars then recorded “Blow” with Ed Sheeran and Chris Stapelton, with the track appearing on Sheeran’s fourth album, No. 6 Collaborations.

It is unclear what Mars has been up to since then, but more news of Mars’ upcoming film will surely hit our news feeds soon…
