Just a few months ago we introduced you to the world of Camp 8 – the brooding, beautiful and dark musical side of Melbourne-based singer Reuben Apirana.
Now, the artist has returned, with a live video, and an equally beautiful lyric video to match.
“I wanted to introduce the world to Camp 8 by showing them who and what Camp 8 is,” explains Jack Stafford, Camp 8’s manager, and the creative force behind these videos. “Both the videos stemmed from a team Camp 8 weekend together, where they drank wine, wrote songs, and filmed videos.”
On the topic of the lyric video, Stafford tells us he had to “be personal about it.”
“We shot the footage for the video all in one weekend, and a bunch of stuff happened. We recorded a live video, drank some wine… Reuben and Hayden (Calnin) worked on some songs and on the way home the car broke down,” he tells us.
Not afraid to shy away from his love for cinema, the creator developed the video directly from personal encounters with Camp 8. “It’s a bit of an ode to cinema, which I personally love. Songs are stories and I wanted this story to be introduced well,” Stafford concludes.
“Everything is the preface to the emotion and aftermath of the ending of a tumultuous relationship, one that exploded,” Apirana confesses.
And Stafford confirms that statement. “It’s a preface, this video represents that same sentiment. Here’s Camp 8, here are the people he loves and works with (minus his sister Molly who currently lives interstate and wasn’t around the weekend of filming). That’s the idea of it.”

Meanwhile, a similar ethos was behind the live video. It was created where the music was made, to really make the viewer “feel closer to the Camp 8 project.”
And closer I feel.
“We wanted to do it with feeling. Justin’s efforts on the guitar allowed Hayden [who edited the video] to cut in shots from the whole weekend. That made it feel much more personal for us,” Stafford describes the process behind the live video.
Stafford, who shot and directed the live recording, also recently directed Hayden Calnin’s new music video, ‘Fuck Collingwood’.
“Welcome to Camp 8, enjoy your stay.”
