If you’ve ever seen the Sound City documentary, you will know how vital a mixing board is to the overall sound of an album. As the doco explained, it’s a mix of the technical and the magical, and there is no denying that albums from that studio – from Fleetwood Mac’s self-titled record to Weezer’s Pinkerton – all have a certain warm sound you can’t quite describe but can notice all the same.
With that in mind, you’d be very lucky to get your hands on the original desk used to record Pink Floyd’s magnum opus Dark Side Of the Moon at London’s Abbey Road Studios – a custom EMI TG12345 MK IV console for those playing at home – which Abbey Road engineer Brian Gibson claims is the “greatest to ever be constructed.”
As Dangerous Minds points out, Paul McCartney, Kate Bush, and The Cure also recorded on the console – which will be auctioned off later this month. We have no idea what this baby will end up going for: despite the history, it is also rare, analogue, half a century old, and in good working order – so the price is anyone’s guess.
