And thus Cardi B’s ceaseless quest to make money moves continues. The Grammy Award-winning rapper has filed to trademark her signature catchphrase “Okurrr.”
According to documents posted by The Blast, Cardi is filing to trademark the catchphrase under her company, Washpoppin, Inc. for merchandise purposes. The documents suggest that the musician specifically wants to own the phrase for the use of “paper goods, namely paper cups and posters.” Urban Outfitters is going to have a field day.
This move carries unprecedented cultural significance, for today marks the day that we, as a society, learned how to correctly spell “okurrr.” I’m ashamed to admit that I’ve spent the past year misspelling it with a meagre two r’s, an unforgivable sin. Okurrr has become such an iconic catchphrase that it served as the punchline for Pepsi’s 2019 Superbowl ad.
Back in April 2018, Cardi B delved into the etymology of her catchphrase. During an interview on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, Cardi revealed that the phrase represents “a cold pigeon in New York City.” Poetic.

Back in December, Cardi B finally won a two-year legal battle over trademarking her stage name.
Earlier this week it was announced that Cardi B would make her feature film debut. Cardi is set to star in Hustlers, a film inspired by a New York Magazine article about a posse of strippers who scam the pants off their Wall Street Clients. She will be joined by Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu (Crazy Rich Asians), Lili Reinhart (Riverdale), Julia Stiles (10 Things I Hate About You) and more.
