American musician Frank Iero, best known as the guitarist for emo giants My Chemical Romance, was involved in a serious bus crash in Sydney’s CBD yesterday afternoon. In a tweet, Iero said it was a ‘miracle’ he and members of his crew survived.

Iero is in the country to perform a series of shows with his band, Frnkiero And The Patience, and had just arrived at the Sydney headquarters of social media platform Twitter for a Q&A. As Fairfax reports, a bush crashed into the rear of Iero’s van at about 3.50pm.

According to police, the bus had just unloaded its last round of passengers and only the driver was on board when it hit the rear of the stationary van. The accident occurred on Park Street, between George and Pitt streets.

The guitarist and another man were standing behind the van at the time and sustained serious leg injuries as a result of the crash. A third man was treated for cuts and bruises, but the driver of the van was not injured.

“Hi friends thanks all for the well wishes. we’re pretty banged up but miraculously alive& in stable condition. I’m still in a state of shock,” Iero wrote on Twitter. Alexander Paul, bassist for The Patience, tweeted that “everyone is in stable condition“.

“Early investigations suggest the bus was stationary, before continuing forward and hitting the rear of a van that was stationary and in the process of being unloaded by three men,” police said in a statement, via Fairfax.

“The bus driver was uninjured and taken to hospital for mandatory testing.” Police are now investigating the cause of the crash and have urged any witnesses who have not already spoken to police to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Iero was in the country earlier this year to play two free shows for fans after Soundwave 2016, which he and his band were meant to play, was cancelled. Iero played two free shows in record stores in Melbourne and Sydney, respectively.
