Children Collide are about to take off to play some truly delectable headline shows in support of their new single ‘Arrows’. The band are taking advantage of the extra-long Easter & ANZAC Day weekend to peddle their musical wares on a tour that starts in Brisbane next Wednesday 20th April. Tone Deaf caught up with drummer Ryan Caesar to throw some questions at him ahead of the tour.
With your second Big Day Out appearance now under your belt, tell us about some of the highlights of the tour?
My personal highlight was watching Primal Scream every night. Brilliant. A downside to this was my girlfriends burgeoning obsession with Bobby Gillespie taking permanent root in our relationship. I fare very badly when compared to this lithe Scottish devil.
You’re heading out on another Australian Tour to promote the release of the new single ‘Arrows’ – what do you do to pass time in the Tarago, in airports waiting around and when you’re on the plane.
We sit around collectively answering the same old questions in Q + As.
Ever start to feel you’re a bit too old to be hurtling around the stage like you do?
Yes.
Have any of you ever been arrested? If so what for?
Yes. The reasons why the arrest occurred is a grey area. We have noticed no obvious impact on album sales either so you can expect a death in the band soon.
You’re taking Red Riders on tour with you, who are breaking up at the end of it. If you could take any now defunct Australian band on tour with you who would it be and why?
There are many obvious choices for this one but the real question is which one will impress people the most? Maybe we’d just stick with Johnny Diesel and ensure a constant supply of champagne on the rider.
You’re clocked up a serious number of gigs over the years. Any idea how many in total?
You stop counting once you reach our age.
If you had to pick a single one as a stand out, what would it be?
We once played a gig in Salt Lake City to two old women and a group of confused Mormon teens in a side room of a ballet theatre. That certainly stands out.
What’s the best way to kill time in another city while you’re waiting around for sound check?
Age a bit more, get arrested.
You did a lot of recording for your last record in Spain – any idea where you might record the next long player and when it might be?
We’re planning to start recording our third album this year in Collingwood, the Spain of Melbourne.
What Aussie artists are on high rotation on your iPod at the moment?
Zond.
Don’t lie – what band posters did you have on your bedroom wall as a kid?
I used to have a picture of Jenny Garth from 90210 above my bed, right next to a Sepultura poster and a Smashing Pumpkins poster. I was an awkward child.
