After a five-year hiatus, CHVRCHES are back with a new single, “Roses.”
The track premiered as BBC Radio 1’s Hottest Record and is out now via Futures Music Group.
“Roses” moves the band toward a rock sound and addresses social and political themes in Britain, with singer Lauren Mayberry snarling, “raise a glass to delusions of the good days of blood and wine; of pearls for swine.”
The song’s Orwellian closing announcement, “If I may command your undivided attention, now we can start,” sets the stage for what’s to come from new material that will be unlike anything the band has released before.
Mayberry said of their return: “This is the longest break we had ever taken between albums and when we got together to write new music, we wanted to really push ourselves and not be retreading ground we’d walked before.”
“I really think we achieved that. It feels like the most coherent vision we’ve had as a band. We’re excited to be back.”
Earlier this year, the band performed together for the first time in nearly three years as part of Robert Smith’s Teenage Cancer Trust’s Royal Albert Hall concert series, which also featured Garbage, My Bloody Valentine, and Elbow.

“I promise I’m not just inside watching telly all the time; we have been making a record,” Mayberry told the audience at the time.
“And we thought, since this is a special night, we would play something off that record for you guys. So be kind to us, we’ve never played this in front of human beings before.”
