After several colourful rock performances on Australian turf earlier this month, including their show in Sydney, which our Tone Deaf reviewer called a night “of undying spirit and celebration” that proved Coldplay are “worthy of the title of biggest band in the world;” the British superstars have hinted they will be taking an extended break from the touring circuit for quite some time.
Billboard reported the news shortly after the conclusion of the Australian leg of their Mylo Xyloto tour, after their final performance of their stopover lit up Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday night, gifting fans what may be the last glimpse of the mellow rockers for some time, according to playful frontman Chris Martin, as he announced: “This is the last big show for three years or so… I don’t want to stop.”
Earlier on, Martin thanked the crowd for coming, and promises “that we’re going to play for you the best fucking show in our life”, indicating the group had perhaps one final statement to make on groups the Aussie fan base.
The night featured many highlights, but none more than the band’s tribute to good friends and former local Brisbane outfit Powderfinger.“This is the last big show for three years or so… I don’t want to stop.”
The band payed special homage to the Aussie rock icons as they performed a blissful cover of “My Happiness”. Martin then went on to announce his love for the Aussie rockers, telling the Brisbane audience, “We miss you Powderfinger.”
The members of Powerfinger became close friends with the British group when the Australian group supported them on U.S. dates a decade ago.
Shortly after Coldplay’s Queensland performance, an online poll conducted by the local Courier Mail newspaper found almost 1,000 music fans rated this particular show as the city’s best ever stadium performance, toppling electric stadium shows by AC/DC, Robbie Williams, Michael Jackson, and Bruce Springsteen – just to name a few.
Despite Martin’s announced break from on stage in front of a packed crowd, the band still has three arena spectaculars to perform before year’s end.
The charming four piece will play three dates in the US before ending 2012 on a high. Teaming up with fellow world beater (and another celebrity chum) Jay-Z, Coldplay will share the stage with the iconic rapper on New Year’s eve for one final, and no doubt spectrum bending performance at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.
Whilst no official statement from the band has been released, the quartet currently has no dates booked in for next year, indicating the group may be planning a well deserved holiday.
2012 has heralded a number of high profile acts announcing long term breaks, such as the Foo Fighters announcing their extended hiatus earlier this year. However, frontman Dave Grohl will no doubt be kept busy with the release of his rockumentary Sound City Records, as well as featuring on the new Queens Of The Stone Age album; along with Nine Inch Nails/How To Destroy Angels maverick Trent Reznor.
