Foo Fighter, superstar dummer-for-hire, former Nirvana member, ‘Nicest Guy In Rock’ – Dave Grohl holds many titles, and he’s recently added another role to his all-star CV; that of film-maker.

Grohl has put together what may turn out to be the ultimate rock n roll movie in Sound City, a feature length documentary about the titular recording studios in California.

Though he was initially secretive about his rockumentary, with naught but a teaser trailer surfacing online online a few months ago giving the first glimpse of the film, Grohl has since shown off how he’s flexed his little black book of celebrity contacts for all its worth.

The latest footage to drop online from the film is just as juicy as the videos that appeared last month. They feature Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich (above) and REO Speedwagon’s Kevin Cronin (below) getting all rosy-eyed discussing their musical influences.

In particular, Metallica’s Danish drummer recalls seeing Deep Purple in his youth – who Metallica covered for an upcoming tribute album to the 40th Anniversary of Purple’s 1972 record, Machine Head.

Both Ulrich and Cronin are just a taste of the huge number of musicians and producers interviewed for the film project, which follows the tale of a recording console that Grohl purchased from the studio, located in Los Angeles’ Van Nuys area, when it announced last year it would be closing its doors after providing an iconic space for recording artists since 1969.

The Foo, and proud owner of 400kg drumsticks,  even recorded there himself, when Nirvana crafted their masterpiece, Nevermind with producer Butch Vig, and yes, Vig features in the film too – talking about the iconic sessions for the 1991 album.

Grohl has really dug deep from his little black book of famous friends for his upcoming feature, with appearances from some of the legendary names that recorded at Sound City, who consider it to be the final word in analog recording sites. Including (*deep breath*):

Frank Black (The Pixies), Ross Robinson (producer Korn, Slipknot), fellow Foo, Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters), Tim Commemford (Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave), Tom Petty, Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac; and – of course – Grohl’s best pal and everyone’s favourite flame-haired Elvis: Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures).

Sound City is currently in post-production, but Groh’s Roswell Films plans to have the film ready for a release in the near-future. The film’s official twitter page had this to tweet recently:

Guess what happened? Last day of shooting. It’s all in the can, man. swear a for reals release date soon + super cool shit coming @ you.

Personally we can’t wait to see the final doco, which with its rock history subject and all-star list of names, looks set to be added to the pantheon of greatest rock movies of all time.
