This October marks four years since Slipknot released their latest album, .5: The Gray Chapter. But with the group supposedly set to start laying down tracks for a new record later this year, frontman Corey Taylor has revealed it is set to include some of the best lyrics he’s ever written.
Back in December, percussionist Shawn “Clown” Crahan revealed that the group aren’t set to enter the studio until November of this year to record their sixth full-length album.
“There’s a plethora of shit written. I don’t wanna be told by a label when to write, like some fucking Cheerio,” Crahan explained to NME last year. “I wanna write because I write. I’ve made people so much fucking money – pay for the studio. Give me this engineer, give me this producer. It’s just jamming, but I’ve never heard music like this, that we’re doing right now.
“I’ll be 50 by the time it comes out. I’ll be touring when I’m 50, they’ll throw me a birthday party! So where I’m at these days, I’m like, ‘Maybe make it the last one.'”
Then in April, the group shared a cryptic post which indicated that their new record might be released in 2019, much to the delight of every one of their fans.
Now, in an interview with Loudwire, frontman Corey Taylor has opened up about some of the personal lyrics he’s been writing.
“It’s been a heavy couple of years for me personally,” Taylor explained. “So I’m working out some things, personally for myself, which has been great. I’ve been able to grab ahold of some of the depression that I’ve been fighting and formulate the way that I want to describe it.”
“So some of these lyrics are, to me, some of the best I’ve ever written. It’s probably the most I’ve shared in years.”
“Hearing some of the guys in Slipknot read and react to some of the lyrics that I’ve been writing has been fantastic. I know Clown was like, just blown away by how open and raw it all felt. It felt like the old days,” he continued.
“It felt like the beginning when it was just – we were the wound and the fans were the scabs. Trying to get it to heal and we were all trying to heal together. That’s what this kind of feels like.”
Corey Taylor is currently booked through to November with his other band, Stone Sour, so it looks as though that might indeed be when recording kicks off in earnest once again. Regardless, it seems that the new record is set to be one of the most personal records that the group have ever put out, so it will definitely be worth the wait.
