One brave Canadian woman has yielded the power of Metallica and used it to defend herself in a standoff with a cougar.

Vancouver Island woman Dee Galant was out walking with her dog Murphy when they noticed a creature lurking in the bushes. “It was crouched down, doing that kind of prowl, predator walk that they do — that was when I waved my arms and yelled, ‘Hey, you stop!’ and it did,” she shared.

“Initially I wasn’t that scared,” she continued. “I remember thinking, ‘Cool, that’s a cougar,’ and then it was, ‘Why is it still there?’ before turning into, ‘Oh my God, it’s coming toward me, I need to make it stop.’”

Naturally, she did the only thing one can do in a situation that tense. Gallant whipped out her phone and began blasting Metallica hit ‘Don’t Tread On Me’. “I thought it was the noisiest thing on my phone that would probably scare it, that was also the message I wanted to convey to the cougar.”

The unwavering potency of metal prevailed, and the Black Album song stopped the cougar right in its tracks.  “As soon as the first notes blared out, it ran into the bush.”

Metallica will be heading down under later this year for the Australian leg of their WorldWired tour. The band will be bringing along our favourite masked deviants Slipknot. Tour dates and ticket information for the shows below.
