Maren Morris, Brandi Carlile, Amanda Shires and Natalie Hemby have formed the new supergroup, The Highwomen and their debut single ‘Redesigning Women’ has just been released.
“It’s about banding together, abandoning as much ego as humanly possible, holding one another up, and amplifying other women every chance we get,”said Brandi Carlile in the media release for the new single.
“Shoulder to shoulder. One push, one love,” she added.
Along with the ongoing issues regarding gender equality and pay-gaps in broader society, female artists continue to struggle to get support from predominantly male radio programmers on US country radio. Morris, Carrie Underwood and Kelsea Ballerini have featured prominently on playlists in recent years.
But overall, female artists remain grossly underrepresented.
Just last week, the Billboard Country Airplay chart featured only 6 female artists in the top 40.
Morris has been very vocal about this issue for some time and recently addressed it in her provocative interview in Playboy.
“I work hard. I wish the same for my sisters, because they work just as hard, if not harder, than I do, and they don’t get a single spin on the radio. I don’t think I’m pissing on my success by speaking up for them,” she said in the interview.
“I’m just trying to say, while I have the success and while I’m here, why aren’t any of my friends getting played? I want to shine a light while I have it and not let it be just about me.”

This isn’t the first time Morris and Carlile have recorded together. They recently collaborated on the song ‘Common’ which features on Morris’ latest chart-topping album, GIRL.
The self-titled debut album from The Highwomen, produced by the legendary Dave Cobb, will be released on September 6, with guests on the album revealed so far to include Miranda Lambert, Jason Isbell, Sheryl Crow, Tanya Tucker and Lori McKenna.
