Dave Grohl is gearing up to showcase his immense musical talent on a grand scale next week, as he unveils his newest project; a documentary about the recording of his 23 minute instrumental track.

Back in May, the rocker announced that he was going to be working on a mammoth track, explaining that he had plans for an array of instruments in a Los Angeles recording studio and just go wild.

“I’ll hit play and the clock will start ticking. I will record the first drum part, then I will run to the next drum set and play another drum part that will record over the first,” he explained. “Then I will do the same with all the guitars, all assigned to a different moment in the instrumental.”

“The best part is we’ll film everything with multiple cameras so by the end of it you will see and hear one song being played for 25 minutes, with six different Dave Grohls playing every note, on every single instrument, all the way through in one take.”

While fans were undoubtedly curious about what such a project would sound like, it appears we won’t have to wait too much longer, with his new project (and its accompanying documentary) being released next week.

Directed by Dave Grohl with help from David Monroe (Sound CitySonic Highways) and filmed by Brandon Trost (The Disaster Artist, This Is The End), August 10th will see the release of PLAY, a two-part mini documentary that showcases Grohl’s love affair with music, and the recording of the new instrumental piece.

“Watching my kids start to play music and learn to sing or play drums, it brings me back to the time when I was their age listening to albums, learning from listening… and when I take my kids to the place where they take their lessons, I see these rooms full of children that are really pushing themselves to figure this out,” Grohl explained.

“And even now, as a 49-year-old man, I’m still trying to figure it out… it’s not something that you ever truly master. You’re always chasing the next challenge, and you’re always trying to find a way to improve on what you’ve learned.”

Viewers will get the rare chance to see how Dave Grohl works in a studio setting, as the rocker writes and records the track in real time, watching him lay down the drums, before heading over to guitar, bass, keyboards, and so on to lay down additional tracks.

An ambitious project, only someone as dedicated and talented as Dave Grohl could pull such a thing off, so you know this one will have to be some essential viewing.

PLAY is set to be released on August 10th, heading to streaming and digital download services. A limited edition vinyl release is also set to be unleashed on September 28th, so be sure to order that one before it sells out.
