Dave Grohl has disavowed any notion that the Foo Fighters were ever cool, claiming that the band is “totally dad rock”.
On paper, the Foo Fighters are one band who are cooler than the other side of the pillow.
Formed by former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, the group has since expanded to feature members of Sunny Day Real Estate, the Germs, and No Use For A Name, dishing out countless classic tracks and records that feature their iconic sound along the way.
In fact, if you were to ask any young music fan just who the coolest band in the world is, the answer would likely be the Foo Fighters. With amazing live shows, critical acclaim, and one of the most badass discographies in rock music, there’s no denying that the group are as cool as ever.
Well, actually, there is one person who would take issue with such a claim, and that’s Dave Grohl himself.

As The AV Club points out, Dave Grohl recently appeared on an episode of the Good For You podcast with Whitney Cummings to not only discuss the “dad rock” classification, but embrace it with open arms (and a shirt tucked into jeans, presumably).
“You know the whole dad rock thing?” he asked. “We’re totally dad rock.

As Grohl continued, he admitted that that when the band were recording 1999’s ‘Learn To Fly’ from There Is Nothing Left To Lose (their third consecutive debut in the ARIA top five), they strayed away from the metal experimentation of their contemporaries, aiming instead to make a record that would appeal to fans of the AM Gold series of compilations.
“We’ve just never been hip or cool,” he added. “And I think that the reason why we’re still here is because we do kind of disconnect ourselves from the popular stuff that’s going on, but also because what the fuck do we care?
“Like honestly, I just wanna play music. Having watched a lot of my friends not survive, I just want to be alive and play music and I really don’t give a fuck if we’re cool or not.”
While plenty of fans will likely disagree with Dave Grohl’s assertion that the band aren’t cool, the fact remains that they’re still one of the most successful rock bands of the modern era, and that alone is pretty damn cool.
