It’s been 23 years since Nirvana disbanded following the death of frontman Kurt Cobain, but that doesn’t mean that Dave Grohl hasn’t given thought to the concept of future Nirvana shows.
Many folks would recall how Nirvana have sort of reformed in recent years, with Paul McCartney filling in for Cobain at the Benefit Concert for Hurricane Sandy in 2012, and a number of great vocalists pulling lead duties for Nirvana’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014. Of course, it wasn’t really the same, was it?
Now, in a recent interview with The Times, Dave Grohl has expressed his feelings in regards to the possibility of a reunion for the band.
“I got together with my old bandmates, Krist [Novoselic] and Pat [Smear, now with Foo Fighters], and guests including Joan Jett and Lorde, and we played those songs again,” Grohl said in regards to the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame performance.
“It sounded just like it did, but of course with one thing missing. We hadn’t played a Nirvana set since Kurt died. Could we do that again? I don’t know,” he added.
While Grohl doesn’t seem all that sold on a reunion, Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic has been more open towards it. Back in 2013, while reminiscing on the band’s performance at the 1992 Big Day Out, Novoselic said it would be great to have a Nirvana reunion of sorts in Australia, adding that “it needs to happen.”
As Ultimate Guitar also reports, many fans came out of the woodwork to comment on the news of Grohl’s comments, with many suggesting what the potential lineup could look like. Novoselic seemed to express interest in one comment that suggested the lineup consist of “[Original Nirvana drummer] Chad Channing on drums, Dave Grohl on guitar and vocals, Novoselic and Smear too of course.”
Let’s face it, the chances of this are pretty slim, but let’s be real, if we heard that Nirvana were touring, there’s no way that tour wouldn’t sell out.
