Following the news that world-wide stadium fillers the Foo Fighters will be taking a well deserved break from their musical activities, the Triple M network has announced that frontman Dave Grohl will take control of the radio airwaves, preaching the word of his new film project.
Grohl’s new cinematic documentary, Sound City, details the rock n roll lathered history of the illustrious LA-based recording studio of the same name; and the new radio series, Dave Grohl Presents Sound City, ties in nicely with the new rockumentary and from Monday, Triple M will broadcast the nine episode program.
Grohl reveals that the series works its way chronologically through the timeline of Sound City Studios, from 1970 to 2011, featuring music recorded at the legendary Californian studio.
In a report from Radiotoday, a jubilant Grohl said: “I’m so proud of the Sound City film and beyond excited for the world to see what I’ve been working on for the past year.” The icon later added: “Even before that, though, I’m grateful to Triple M, and radio networks around the world, for giving me the opportunity to share all this great music and to let people know what got me excited about Sound City in the first place.”
Sound City Studios is responsible for producing some of the best rock and alternative albums of all time, including Nirvana’s 1991 genre defining release Nevermind, Rage Against The Machine’s 1992 self titled debut (which last week celebrated its 20th Anniversary), as well as more recent works such as Arctic Monkeys’ Suck It And See and Wolfmother’s breakout self-titled debut.
The documentary will feature a rock fanatic’s wishlist of music legends, including Frank Black (The Pixies), Ross Robinson (producer Korn, Slipknot), fellow Foo, Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters), Tim Commerford (Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave), Tom Petty, Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) and Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac.“I’m grateful to Triple M… for giving me the opportunity to share all this great music and to let people know what got me excited about Sound City in the first place.” – Dave Grohl
The documentary will also feature guest appearances from iconic rock identities such as Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich, world class producer Butch Vig (who was one of the key engineers behind Nirvana’s Nevermind) and Queens Of The Stone Age leader and Grohl’s best buddy Josh Homme.

The two will also be spending much more time together following the news that surfaced that Grohl will be the replacement drummer on the new Queens of the Stone Age album, following drummer Joey Castillo’s departure. Grohl joins what is fast becoming one of next year’s most highly anticipated LPs, following news that the record also features appearances from Trent Reznor and, more surprisingly, former QOTSA bassist Nick Oliveri.
The announcement of the Foo Fighters hiatus has opened up several new avenues for Grohl, as he filters through a backlog of requests for his services.
Event organizers of global music conference SXSW have also recently enlisted the knowledge of Grohl, announcing the rocker as one of the event’s keynote speaker as part of the Austin, Texas event, which this year saw over 2,000 performers play at more than 90 different venues over a period of 10 days.
South By Southwest has fast become one of the biggest and most influential music festivals in the world, with this year’s event seeing over 2,000 performers play at more than 90 different venues over a period of 10 days.
The Dave Grohl Presents Sound City series will air at 9pm AEDST on Triple M every Monday until January 28.
