It’s been a big year for the UK rapper already, now he adds this trophy to the list of wins.
Beating out albums by Foals, Slowthai and Little Simz, Dave’s debut album PSYCHODRAMA has won one of the most prestigious prizes in British Music – the Hyundai Mercury Prize.
The 21 year old has been releasing music pretty consistently since his Six Paths EP in 2016, yet with the release of PSYCHODRAMA, the Londoner really stormed through as a name to watch.
Members of the Mercury Prize judging panel this year included Stormzy, Jorja Smith, Gaz Coombes and noted British broadcasters Annie Mac and Mike Walsh.
“PSYCHODRAMA is the musical equivalent of a literary masterpiece: a conceptual album about Dave’s experience of growing up in South London, structured in the form of a therapy session, which takes a deeply personal story and gives it universal relevance.” a statement from the panel has read.
Bringing his mum on stage, Dave dedicated the award to his loved ones, particularly his older brother Christopher, who is currently serving a lifetime prison sentence.
Last year, Wolf Alice won the prize with their record, Visions Of A Life. The Mercury Prize has been running since 1992, with records by artists including Radiohead, PJ Harvey, Arctic Monkeys and more taking out the title.
