Saturday Night Live featured David Byrne as their musical guest on their last episode, and the Talking Heads frontman sang his classic song ‘Once in a Lifetime’ and his BPA collaboration ‘Toe Jam’.

The David Byrne episode was hosted by comic and former SNL writer John Mulaney. There was also an appearance from Jake Gyllenhaal, as Byrne performed an elaborate Broadway-themed tribute to LaGuardia Airport.

Mulaney returned as SNL host for the third time as well, following his March 2019 and April 2018 appearances on the show. He was the SNL host to lead the show on a Leap Year Saturday. Byrne recently announced that his hit Broadway stage show American Utopia will return in September for a 17-week run through early 2021.

Byrne’s second performance of the night after ‘Once In A Lifetime’ was a version of ‘Toe Jam,’ which was originally released under The Brighton Port Authority in collaboration with Fatboy Slim. Upon its original release, it was given a fun, NSFW video.

Since the breakup of Talking Heads, Byrne has been enjoying a very successful solo career, and returned to SNL for his second performance to support his first solo album back in 1989. It’s been a long time coming for Byrne to return to the show, as the last performance before this was in 1979, when Talking Heads performed together in the bands only appearance.

The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, reuniting for a short performance.
