Knievel’s new album Emerald City is simply lovely. The fifth album from the band, Knievel know their indie-pop… and then some.

The first listen brings to light the depth of the album, with warm chords and crystal harmonies that lift you up and let you softly fall. With soft, sincere songs that make you feel alone and complete all at the same time, coupled with genuine, earnest lyrics – it’s certainly a record to savour.

From the first chord progression, in opening track ‘Through the Rainbow Dark,’ the album sets a beautiful tone. Following that, ‘They Listen Out’ sets a high standard, one that Knievel continuously pushes through in the subsequent tracks.

The flow of the album shows group member Wayne Connoly’s aptitude as a producer. The album takes you on a journey, ebbing and flowing seamlessly and with an enthusiasm and keen knowledge that only they could pull off.

It’s hard to choose a favourite song, each brings something to the table, keeping to the overall feel of the album but contributing something different at the same time. ‘Mirrored Hall’ is sure to be a favourite, with an upbeat, catchy melody juxtaposed with that subtle edge Knievel have perfected.

It’s that balance between sweet and eerie, joy and melancholy that the outfit have down to a tee. It makes the album. This is reminiscent in all their songs, but ‘New Light’ especially, a song whose title describes itself perfectly.

Knievel are a band whose experience and effervescence comes across in their fine-tuned composition. Not a hair is out of place, but that’s not a bad thing. Quite the opposite, Emerald City will leave its mark on you, personifying splendour at its best.
