It takes experience, big ideas, and determination to produce something that truly nails your attention, and you know it’s special when it seems this effortless.
The purveyors of this curious brew are Dorsal Fins, headed up by Liam McGorry, the Melbourne based go-to-guy trumpeter and songwriter of our finest soul collective, Saskwatch. McGorry has setup Dorsal Fins as a studio-only project, working with a host of friends and admired collaborators such as Jarrad Brown, Ella Thompson, Richard Bradbeer, Sam Raines, Rob Muinos, Joe Cope, Olaf Scott, Ross Beaton and Will Morrissey.
Dorsal Fins have surfaced with ‘Nothing Left To Hide’ (featuring Jarrad Brown), a gritty track which basks in the glory of 90s guitar pop era throwback whilst maintaining a distinct sonic tenacity not unlike cult heroes Primal Scream and The Cribs.
While many local electronic influenced contemporaries are working with discrete, sectioned units of sound, Dorsal Fins are instead focused on crafting gutsy renditions of the traditional ‘song’: top-notch concept, melody, and structure combined in a single offering with rich instrumentation and a bevy of well-produced sounds. It’s a tantalising and rewarding listen.
Now, ‘Nothing Left To Hide’ has been followed up with a video and a tweaked out remix courtesy of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.
Dorsal Fins are set to bring enviable class and fearlessness with the early 2014 release of their debut 12” Gripless EP.
