One massive Megadeth fan has managed to score a massive collection of gear, buying almost all of Dave Mustaine’s guitars in a recent online sale.
Late last month, it was revealed that Dave Mustaine of Megadeth was set to clear out his shed somewhat, offloading a bunch of his old gear through the website Reverb.
“When you’ve been playing and touring for as long as I have, you tend to amass quite a collection of gear,” he explained in a video. “They’re great instruments and they represent more than 40 years of playing, but I’ve got more than I could possibly use myself.
“I owe so much to my fans. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t even have all this gear. I’d rather give it back to them than let it sit and collect dust.”
With a massive collection of stuff on offer, including effects pedals, kick pedals, crash symbols, and 21 electric guitars, just about any fan of thrash metal would have salivated at the chance to get their hands on a bit of rock history.
However, as one fan as revealed, he managed to walk away with almost every single one of the guitars that Mustaine put up for sale.
Check out Keith Gannon’s video about buying Dave Mustaine’s guitars:
Taking to YouTube recently (via Blabbermouth), UK-based owner of Essex Recording Studios, Keith Gannon, revealed that he was the one who cleaned out Dave Mustaine’s guitar closet, but maintains that it wasn’t for selfish reasons.

Describing himself as “a huge Megadeth fan”, Gannon explained that he wanted to make sure that the guitars were going “to come somewhere that they’ll be appreciated”, allowing his studio’s clientele “to touch these guitars and play these guitars and record with these guitars, if they want to.”
Of course, he admits there is something of a professional interest in the massive purchase, noting that this cache of instruments “plays a major role in supporting the studio and our ability to give artists free time and very inexpensive time when they come and record with us.”
So just how much did Gannon drop on this purchase? Well, according to the sales figures over at Reverb, the 21 guitars sold for a total of $63,654.59, with the studio owner stating his belief that he missed out on about two of them.
Needless to say, at an average cost of about $3,031.17, this is one massive investment, and undoubtedly one huge addition to the halls at Essex Recording Studios.
One question does remain though, and that’s how exactly he managed to actually acquire all the guitars.
According to his explanation, it all comes down to getting an influx of cash by selling his car and his own instruments, before using his own experience as a buyer at similar auctions to snap everything up.
In related news, Megadeth bassist David Ellefson offered an update on Dave Mustaine’s cancer battle recently, revealing that the iconic rocker has finished his treatments, and is now looking to the future while in recovery mode.
