Hi, it’s Doug and Russ here. We write electronic music together in a band called fishing. This year we’ve been pretty busy laying down tracks, and we just put out our second 7” of the songs ‘Choy lin’ and ‘White Sheet Beach’. For the next month or so we’ll be touring the east coast to support this release, we’re really excited to be on the road again. Apart from that, we are putting the finishing touches on our first album that is due out in early 2013.
You’ve just released the clip for ‘Choy Lin’, did you have a clear vision of how the video would look?
Yep, we had a pretty clear idea from the start on how everything would work. Russ has done all of our art in the past so we wanted to go with the same collage work that we’d used for the HOOKZ albums that we’ve been giving away online. We just did a bunch of after effects tutorials and kind of figured out how to make it all move as we were going.
Did you try and match the visuals with the aesthetics of the music?
We really wanted to highlight the dynamics of the song with a video, and we really wanted to do this with a narrative. It’s sometimes hard to create something really literal when you’re writing instrumental music compared to working with lyrics, so we wanted the film clip not only to reflect the aesthetic of the music but also use the ebbs and flows of the music to create a story.
If you had an endless budget what would be your ideal video clip?
We’d probably just throw heaps of money at Chris Cunningham. We’ve also talked about blowing our next video budget on buying a skyline and then making a low production cost video of us driving it around. Spend the money in the zone with the longest payoff.
What’s your earliest memory of performing and who inspired you to start?
We both played in various bands during high school, and started playing music together pretty much as soon as we met, the year we finished (fishing came about later though). I guess we were just inspired by going and seeing shows. My brother was probably a big influence in that way too – he was playing gigs around Sydney when Russ and I were starting a band and just made us realise that getting shows booked and performing was something that was actually possible.
Having toured so extensively this year how has your live show developed?
We’re probably a bit better at it now than we used to be! We’ve recently started twiddling the set and changing things up with a few new songs. Russ sings a bit and I do a rap quite often, just to do something with vocals to mix things up and introduce something that isn’t coming out of a machine.
What’s on heavy rotation on your iPod right now?
I’m listening to this great rapper called Wiki, Stretch EP by Arca, Andras Fox, the new How To Dress Well album, Kurt Vile, a really cool beatmaker called Mattron…
When you’re Rolling Stones Big, what are you going to request on your rider? don’t be shy. We want specifics!
Sour Cream and Chives Pringles, real good cheese platters. Massages.
Because it’s more fun to do things together, which living Australian artist would you most like to collaborate with? Tell us why?
Aw man just collaborating with each other is a dream. Best friends, long nights in the studio, it’ the magical life we lead. We’d love to do more collaborations with our friends when we get the chance, collarbones, guerre, nakagin, all that crew, as well as SURES, cloud control… the list goes on.
What is your band’s music the best soundtrack for?
Real lyfe straight up 2012.
Can we expect an album in the coming year?
Yep! Early 2013 it’ll be out.
Where we can see you play next?
We’re touring throughout november in Brisbane, byron, Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide. In addition to our own Sydney show we’re playing at OutsideIn which should be a really great festival. And the Byron show as part of our tour is in a backyard, so we’re pretty psyched about that one.
