If you haven’t flopped around Frankie’s d-floor while scoffing down a slice of pepperoni pizza and spilling beer all over your fellow dancing pub patrons, then it’s safe to say you’ve missed out on one helluva iconic Sydney experience.
Sadly, news has broken that the dive bar is set to be demolished, but the good news is that you still have about a year to cross the experience off your bucket list.
If you’re not familiar with Frankie’s Pizza By The Slice, it’s an underground bar that features a checkered red and white pizza shop (that also sells copious amounts of alcohol) on entry. You can then head through a ~secret~ door to get to the real party; a dimly lit dancefloor packed with video games and a long bar that often features live bands.
If you’re a frequent patron of the grungey but delightful dive bar you’ll know there’s another secret back room where you can hang out with other Frankie’s VIPs alike.
The bar is located on Sydney’s Hunter Street which is smack bang in the middle of Sydney CBD, it’s – apparently – also smack bang in the middle of where the city wants to put a brand new train station.
Thankfully, while the Frankie’s as we know it will be no longer (RIP), our delightful transport ministry Andrew Constance feels our pain and has confirmed he won’t leave us high and dry – and Frankie’s-free.
“Frankie’s is an important part of Sydney’s live music scene and we will make sure it is properly supported during this challenging time,” Constance told the Sydney Morning Herald.

“Sydney Metro is assigning Frankie’s a dedicated acquisition manager to guide them through this process and to help find another location.”
The Metro West project is set to start in 2022 and will cost a whopping $27billion.
Frankie’s originally opened its doors in 2013 and was one of the few venues to hold a 24-hour trading license. In its time reigning supreme (pun intended) as one of the best bars in Sydney, it saw the likes of the Foo Fighters, Smashing Pumpkins, and Blondie lead singer Deborah Harry all pop in for a bevy and a cheesy slice of goodness.
