Melbourne has birthed a metallic beast by the name of Scar The Surface who combine gut-wrenching riffs with pounding drums; spitting more metal than you can handle.
Daniel White’s vocals resonate from that of Randy Blythe of Lamb Of God with an added ability to provide harmonic cleans in the gruffest possible way.
The band is set to release their debut studio album From Shadows To The Fire, a record Australia are about to hear a lot about, if they haven’t yet.
Opening track ‘LADOTD’ is absolutely menacing, exploding with riffs and grooves, the song sets expectations for the rest of the record, which are most certainly reached – if not exceeded.
‘Breathing the (D)evil Inside’ brings out familiar musical constructs to that of Killswitch Engage until it develops to imitate some of the older Lamb Of God material. White’s vocal range is incredible and extremely refreshing after a fair absence of straight metal bands of this quality surfacing from Australia.
Tracks like ‘I, the Obscene’ and ‘Without Reverence’ are carefully structured which is appreciated to the acute metal ear. That being said, the chaotic carnage of this record is present, perfecting the record even further.
‘The Traveller Has Come’ demonstrates a combination of Scar The Surface’s groove metal influences with some experimental alternative rock variables – which works almost too well as the style interchanges as the song develops.
