What’s your best excuse for almost missing something important? Caught in traffic, alarm didn’t go off, they’re usually the best go to, how about getting stuck between two doors?
This was the actual reality for Joji Malani last night, the guitarist of Sydney band Gang Of Youths, who literally got sandwiched between two doors and had to be rescued by police in front of many onlookers – all before the band’s big Like A Version on Triple J aired this morning.
It appears Malani was closing the outside doors of a building when the iron security doors somehow locked, trapping Malani in the middle. There’s hilarious video footage below, thankfully he is completely fine – sans maybe a tiny bit of embarrassment:
In more exciting news, Gang Of Youths also just smashed it on Triple J this morning, the band charming hosts Matt and Alex with their sublime rendition of the LCD Soundsystem favourite, ‘All My Friends’.
What makes this Like A Version so great is the fact that Gang Of Youths have tried their hardestest to make ‘All My Friends’ sound like something that came from their garage, not performing like another other cover band.
Removing the buoyant disco and funk LCD vibe and displaying their own instrumental prowess, the track is rather reminiscent of the same rhythm and bass section of New Order’s ‘Age Of Consent’ whilst the harsh smokey vocals burn on, this is how a Like A Version should be done.
We must say that we’re blown away each week with the level of talent that’s hosted at Triple J Studios. We’ve already seen some killer Like A Versions this year, including Hiatus Kaiyote’s incredible rework of Gorillaz, The Bennies’ take on TISM, Sticky Fingers’ take on DMA’s as well as a bold reminder of why the ’90s rule, and Gang Of Youths have definitely slotted themselves comfortably in the upper echelon of this year’s Like A Version.
The year 2015 is looking to be a biggie for Gang Of Youths, who are about to drop their debut record The Positions which is set for release on April 17.
