With a name like LA Women, it’s clear this all-male trio from Wairarapa in New Zealand have the last laugh.

Cousins Jake Schdroski and Zac Emerson, and childhood friend Jesse Brown make soulful pop. Stunningly displayed on new single ‘Under Pressure’, which explores the emotional toll of a life inundated by the internet, the band’s sound makes you sit up and listen.

To celebrate the new track, we spoke to Jake, Zac and Jesse about who they are, what they do, and to learn more about them outside of their music passions.

Get To Know: LA Women

How did your artist name come about?

We were desperate for a name and Zac had a playlist on Spotify of our favourite songs at the time and he called it LA WOMEN and it kinda just stuck.

How would you describe your music to your grandma?

My nana said once described it at elevator music which I guess is a good thing?

Tell us about a few of your tracks; their titles and what they’re about?

‘Under Pressure’ our last release touched on social pressure deriving from technology and social media, which was a bit different for us! And our most popular song ‘Hurricane Love’ we wrote when we were 17 so it’s a bit of a first relationship kinda vibe growing up in a small town.

What do you love about your hometown?

It’s Pretty close to the beach and some awesome places to explore the beauty of New Zealand like the Tararua ranges, I used to go hiking around there a lot it’s so peaceful and just a good place to get away from everything. And Obviously the pantry at home because mum’s always got it full!

Career highlight so far?

It would have to be being signed to island records UK we wouldn’t really be where we are now without them it’s got us our own studio in Auckland city and opportunity’s to look at music not just as a hobby but more of a career which is the dream really.

Fave non-music hobby?

Jake: Recently I’ve been into watching the biggest dogs in the world videos on YouTube haha but I don’t really have any hobbies apart from music. Maybe skateboarding when I have time.

Zac: Videography and photography.

Jesse: Video games and basketball.

What’s on your dream rider?

– Some nice gin
– A comfy couch
– Socks and underwear
– Traditional Italian pizzas
– Never-ending bag of guitar picks
– And a framed photo of Jesse naked

Dream music collaboration?

Frank Ocean or Bon Iver but there’s so many to choose from we could all have different answers from each other.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Just stepped off the tour bus in Croatia onto a yacht, sipping martinis in the sun!

But honestly, I hope we have a bunch of albums out and just still continuing to make music in some way who knows what it will be then the rate of how we consume music now is already so fast and we are onto the next thing.

I think that’s what we will always keep at the forefront of how we create. Just doing what we want to do.

What’s your go-to karaoke song?

Jake: ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody’ by Whitney Houston. That song slaps at any occasion, to be honest.

Jesse: My song is definitely ‘Roses’ by OutKast because the piano at the start hits hard and everyone knows what’s about to go down as soon as that hits.

Zac: My go-to karaoke song would be ‘Wonderwall’ by Oasis but only when I’ve had a few drinks… I tend to point at someone whilst singing it in a bit of a power stance with a few hair flicks here and there.
