Just listening to Pretty Uglys music for a few seconds will have you longing to be back at a sweaty gig now more than ever.

The WA-based punk-meets-surf-rock trio is comprised of three members: Jaxon, Jean-Luc and Jack. And they’re getting us headbanging and jumping to their infectious music, one track at a time.

They’re excited to announce that they release their five-track sophomore EP, Party Friends today. They said, “Feels epic to get this release into the world collectively putting together these tracks in a way that helps solidify our own sound direction from over the past 12 months at least, with both happy and deeper/heavier tracks all in the mix.’’

We were lucky enough to have a chat with the rock trio as part of our Get To Know series. Read on to find out what’s on the band’s dream rider and more.

How did your artist name come about?

Our first drummers Auntie came up with it. Must have been better then our ideas at the time, I think Cheap Peach and Crop Top Kids were a couple of ideas haha.

How would you describe your music to your grandma?

If Buddy Holly lived after his plane crash and continued down his path after a few beers.

Jack said it perfectly but I’d also say loud and annoying.

Tell us about a few of your tracks; their titles and what they’re about?

Beach for Free – A track about the freedoms of teenage life and enjoying the simple things in life like wine n cheese. And the beach of course.

Party Friends- This is about those weekends spent with your friends who never hold back on a good time.

Dreamland Delusion- this is about having weird and wacky dreams, sometimes they’re fun and sometimes not so fun. Either way we all have them right?

What do you love about your hometown?

It’s a treat to come back and visit now we moved away. Longest jetty in the Southern Hemisphere is a bit of a fun fact. Skatepark goes good also.

Busselton is a little town with a big city attitude.

Career highlight so far?

Playing along some of our favourites like Ruby Fields and Pist Idiots. More than that, it’s been awesome playing in a band and connecting on a close level as mates. Have fun, see what happens.

Besides being in a band with my best mates, the best part about it is how we’ve collectively grown into a real band of musicians. Now we know the sound we want to achieve and how to get it. The feeling of 3 people coming together and making a song out of thin air is incredible. You begin to understand how their brain works and that’s pretty beautiful if ya ask me. Can’t buy that in stores man.

Fave non-music hobby?

Baseball, Skating, BMX and beach (Jaxon and Jack)

Everything else kinda went out the window once I discovered music but these days I spend my downtime (if I have any) skating or playing a bit of Nintendo 64 haha.

(Jean Luc)

What’s on your dream rider?

– 25g pouch of champion Ruby

– carton of coopers green

– packet of arnotts venetian biscuits

(Jaxon and Jack)

I’d love to have a pack of Arnott’s Assorted Creams, heaps of water and then a few coopers green post gig. (Jean Luc)

Dream music collaboration?

Wavves or Richard Dawson (Jaxon and Jack)

Trent Reznor or Ian Mackaye (Jean Luc)

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Hopefully still playing music. Feeling creative and people taking to our creations, even better if we can cut back on our day jobs haha. (Jaxon and Jack)

I’ll still be playing music of some sort in 10 years I think. Having an important job has never meant anything to me and I have an incredibly short attention span so studying anything is out of the question. As long as I’m happy really.  (Jean Luc)

What’s your go-to karaoke song?

Oasis – ‘Wonderwall’

Billy Joel – ‘Scenes from an Italian restaurant’

Modern Love – ‘David Bowie’

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Do what you enjoy in life whatever that may be. When it comes to music, write the stuff you want to hear, not what you think other people want to hear.

Ian Mackaye said something along the lines of: Do the work that’s in front of you and don’t look at the profits beyond the work. The profit is a distraction.

What’s one obsession you have that no one would guess after listening to your music?

Jack’s favourite genre is emo.

Jax has been obsessed with watching weird YouTube food reviews lately.

Jean Luc –  I’m very into the whole punk DIY thing and everything from Dischord Records. It keeps me going.

Come May, the group will embark on a WA tour which you sure as hell don’t want to miss out on, so keeping up with their tour news is essential. For more on this topic, follow the Classic Rock Observer.
