As pert of the upcoming Spectrum now festival, one of the country’s best party starters Hot Dub Time Machine will be playing a huge party at the Domain on March 4th.
To celebrate both that and the annual Hottest 100, he’s curated a very special mix titled ‘Hot Dubbest 100’. To accompany the ‘Hot Dubbest 100’ he’s also penned a little run down on what he though of the latest edition of triple j’s Hottest 100. Check it all out below.
“I think it was another great Hottest 100 in what is a Golden Age of Aussie Music. The biggest risk as a music fan is to succumb to old-age and triple j often bears the brunt of people saying it’s “not as good as it used to be,” because they recognise less of the music. Great music is being made all the time. The top ten are all great songs, and mostly really interesting: compare Kendrick Lamar’s ‘King Kunta’ to Coolio’s ‘Gangsters Paradise,’ (1995) and Tame Impala’s 2 songs to Offspring’s 2 top-ten songs (1994) and this list actually seems a lot more edgy and less pop than the 90s!
It’s awesome that the Rubens won! I won’t pretend to be super familiar with the song, but I do know that they are a local band who came up through triple j Unearthed who seem like lovely guys and deserve every success. Go on boys!!
I find it bizarre that Drake’s ‘Hotline Bling’ is allowed, but no Bieber. I get that they don’t want to be trolled, but really…. ‘Hotline Bling’? It snuck in because it’s hip-hop I guess? But it’s really not. It’s to Hip-hop what ‘Agadoo’ was to Reggae. I saw Drake live last year and he was literally the most awful musical performer I have ever seen. If Drake’s in, let ’em all in.”
“I put together a Hot Dubbest 100 recently for my podcast: Hot Dub Time Machine: Radio. It’s a mix of 100 Aussie songs in chronological order from 1971-2015. I think today’s music stands up really well against the classics but I do miss the more eccentric songs and bands. Everything is a bit earnest. Lets find a young Dave Graney singing about how he’s invisible again. How about another Machine Gun Fellatio, the Skyhooks or the Whitlams? The Meeting Tree’s ‘R U a Cop?’ is a step in the right direction.”
