Friday mornings are always that little bit nicer for Aussies, yes, the weekend is so damn close you can taste it, but more importantly, Triple J reveal the week’s Like A Version – and this rendition is an early contender for the best of 2015.
Futuristic soul group and notable Grammy Award nominees Hiatus Kaiyote stopped by the J’s studio to deliver one hell of a Like A Version, covering the Gorillaz favourite, ‘Dare’.
A challenging tune for any live band to take on, the four-piece, joined by an additional couple of performers take the 2005 hit by the horns, reshaping the tune into an almost kraut-meet-soul space-age beat, and boy does it work.
As expected, the charming Nai Palm’s vocals seamlessly peak and trough, weaving through the intricate layer of starry-synths and funk-laden bass beats, taking listeners on a journey through the eclectic sonic trip that is Hiatus Kaiyote.
By complete coincidence, the Melbourne group have dropped their Like A Version the very same day that Damon Albarn announced some very exciting Blur news.
By comparison to some other killer Like A Version’s we’ve already seen this year, from up-and-coming outfits smashing 2014’s biggest track, an almost perfect rendition of an indie anthem and of course, the classic cover of a ’90s hit, Hiatus Kaiyote’s ‘Dare’ sits pretty damn high on the “best of” list.
Enough from us, take a listen to the brilliant Like A Version below:
