High Highs’ debut EP is an extremely impressive and self-assured first release from the New York-based Aussies.

Featuring soaring vocals and layered harmonies that will have their audience captivated from the opening lines, the EP functions effectively as a cohesive whole, evoking a dreamy, and strangely soothing atmosphere.

‘Open Season’ is a beautifully intricate track that is somehow both melancholic and uplifting at the same time. Driven by lead singer Jack Milas’ vulnerable vocals and flying falsettos, the song continually introduces new layers, ending with a glorious and exciting tempo change at the climax.

‘Horses’ provides an epic edge to the self-titled EP, with wistfully reminiscent lyrics that build to the haunting refrain of “when I was a younger child / I was riding”.

Closing track ‘Once Around The House’ features splendid harmonies and distinct acoustic guitar, concluding with a slow fade-out, serving as the perfect conclusion to the EP.

High Highs are primarily focused around Milas’ sweet and honest vocals that are backed by a delightfully clean acoustic guitar. Flashes of piano and electronic experimentations from Oli Chang, as well as Zach Lipkin’s constantly interesting drumming, add the depth and texture that effectively sets the band apart from many other similar releases.

The EP is a breathtaking debut from the three-piece, providing stunning vocals and quietly confident instrumentation, with much promise for the future.
