After rising to some notoriety a couple of years back with the now defunct indie-rock group THNKR, Melbourne friends Fin Bradley and Henry Badgery are back with a new project: Homes. The outfit has recently floated its debut track ‘Best Disguise’ online, and are set to launch the single in style on Thursday 28th November at Melbourne’s LuWow.
So you guys are the remnants of THNKR, how does Homes’ sound differ from that group?
Homes is in many ways a continuation of THNKR, with the two of us being the only ones left from the original THNKR lineup. We’ve really developed and honed our sound as Homes, with soul and groove elements being more prominent in our new songs as opposed to the more indie/electronic influences in THNKR. We’re both really influenced by 60’s soul and rock and roll and we think that vintage sound and high energy is very noticeable in our new set. We like to make people dance so we try and write songs accordingly.
What are the major influences on the sound you’ve created with Homes?
As we mentioned ’60s soul/funk and rock n roll is a massive influence. We try and capture the high energy and danceability of artists like Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding and others alike from that era, and mix it with the vintage guitar and keyboard sounds of bands like The Doors and The Beatles.
How long have you been playing together in general? And how long have you been working on this project?
The two of us have been playing music together for years. Almost 10 of them! We met in high school and formed numerous school bands throughout our teenage years, and continued doing the same thing post school in Melbourne. We’ve developed a good understanding of our respective musical styles and strengths and this has really benefitted our collaborations. Homes has been on the burner for quite a few months. We recorded our debut single in March, and since then have been working hard writing new material and putting a killer band together.

What brought you together?
We met at school and were brought together by a common appreciation of, and interest in, music.
How much material have you got ready to roll at this stage?
We have put together a solid and eclectic set from our repertoire that will be sure to keep you boogieing into the night.
What on-stage set up can fans expect at your upcoming live show; will other musicians join the two of you?
Between the two of us we take care of guitar and vocals (Henry) and Keyboard and Vocals (Fin) and Yes! We have friends… who we are super excited to show off to everyone, as they are musical weapons. Billy Van Duuren and Jack Davies, known collectively as “Groove Patrol”, will be completing the band on drums and bass. We also have a special guest who will add some spicey flavours to the set.
The party atmosphere of the LuWow seems to fit nicely with the vibe of ‘Best Disguise,’ have you played there before? Why did you choose the venue for your single launch?
We played there with THNKR and had a great time, although they booked us with some reluctance this time following an incident with beach balls. For those reading, please don’t bring beach balls. We feel the kooky decor and fun ‘South Seas’ vibes of the joint will suit our sound and help create a fun atmosphere.
You’ve lined up some great supports for the night in Meg Mac and Seven Year Itch and of course Disrute on the decks; what can you tell us about what each of them will bring to the party?
Seven Year Itch are surf vibe wizards. We got them on board as we could foresee their dreamy surf pop being the perfect sound for a setting such as LuWow. Meg Mac is a vocal powerhouse and a master of soulful grooves. Having recently been invited to play Falls Festival this year we are extremely fortunate to have her playing with us on the night. And Disrute will be bringing the funk and laying down fresh tasty jams throughout the night. Its set to be a banger, we can’t wait!
Are there plans for more releases in the near future?
We’ve been so flat out recently with the release of ‘Best Disguise’ and writing and preparing our set for the launch that we haven’t really discussed anything past Thursday. That said, we’re extremely proud of the new material we’ve been conjuring and are itching to get in the studio and lay it down. So with any luck we’ll have some new releases early next year.
