Tame Impala are on one hell of a roll. The Kevin Parker-led project’s latest effort, Currents, was recently unveiled to a wave of acclaim both at home and abroad, with many calling it a shoo-in for album of the year.
As Tone Deaf recently reported, it’s also doing pretty well in the charts. The album managed to knock John Farnham and Olivia Newton John off the top spot on the ARIA Albums Chart and it’s sitting at Number Three in the UK.
Now, Billboard reports the Perth outfit have nabbed some their highest ever positions on multiple charts in the US. Currents is currently sitting at Number Two on the Top Rock Albums chart and is leading the Alternative Albums chart.
According to Nielsen Music, Currents sold some 45,000 copies in the week ending 23rd July. The sales have earned Tame Impala their highest rank on the Billboard 200 at Number Four and their first top 10 entry.
Currents has also managed to top the Vinyl Albums chart with 14,000 LPs sold, which amounts to 31 percent of the album’s sales for the week. That makes it the biggest week for a vinyl album since Jack White dropped Lazaretto, which sold 40,000 units.
Meanwhile, the album’s sterling Aussie debut marks the band’s highest ever chart ranking in Australia. Previous efforts Innerspeaker and Lonerism had both peaked at Number Four on the ARIA Albums Chart.
Not bad for a band who were struggling to draw a crowd at local Perth festivals just seven years ago. Of course, those days are well behind them – the band played a rapturously received set at Splendour In The Grass last weekend.

However, while the album looks to be doing pretty well in terms of sales, we just hope some of that money gets to Parker, who wrote, recorded, and produced the entire album. As he revealed during a Reddit AMA earlier this year, he hasn’t made a dime from Tame Impala’s overseas album sales.
It was later revealed that the reason Parker hadn’t received any money from overseas sales of his record could be because of a tangled web of litigation involving Tame Impala’s former label and their publishing group.
