Boston metalcore giants Ice Nine Kills have released a Friday the 13th themed cover of Fountains of Wayne’s timeless ditty, ‘Stacy’s Mum’.
The band dropped the horror-tinged rendition of the track to celebrate Mother’s Day and the 40th anniversary of cult horror flick Friday The 13th. Which suddenly makes a lot more sense to me because I was sitting at my computer, on Tuesday the 12th of May, writing this article with the idea that the band had based this cover off the superstitious date, not the American slasher franchise.
The band have renamed the track ‘Jason’s Mom’ — after lead character Jason Vorhees. They’ve also rejigged the lyrics to ‘Jason’s Mom has got it goin’ on / With a body count that rivals her son’s’. Truly incredible stuff.
“Today marks the 40th anniversary of Friday The 13th and with tomorrow being Mother’s Day, we thought this acoustic cover would be the perfect way to celebrate,” shared Ice Nine Kills frontman Spencer Charnas.
“We want to dedicate this to the memory of the inspirational songwriter Adam Schlesinger, who co-wrote this amazing and enduring pop song for Fountains Of Wayne. We hope all the Moms out there have a truly killer Mother’s Day.” You can find the song and lyrics below.
Fountains Of Wayne’s Adam Schlesinger passed away last month due to coronavirus complications. In addition to his work with Fountains of Wayne, Schlesinger released six albums with the band Ivy, was a member of Tinted Windows (a power-pop supergroup with Taylor Hanson of Hanson, Bun E. Carlos of Cheap Trick and James Iha of The Smashing Pumpkins) and the synth-pop band Fever High. He also conquered the songwriting realm in theatre, television and cinema.
