As our favourite music legends get older, and the cruel hands of time march forever forward, treating us to us to a multitude of untimely celebrity deaths in the process, we’re treating every collaboration or performance with a vast array of famous musos as a blessing. Such was the case in New York City last night, which saw what is sure to be one of the most talked about collaborations in a long time.
As NME reports, performing at New York City’s Tibet House to celebrate Philip Glass’ 80th birthday at New York’s Carnegie Hall, New Order played a legendary set which saw them invite a musical legend onto the stage. Joining the group onstage was the punk legend Iggy Pop, who performed ‘Stray Dog’, from New Order’s 2015 album Music Complete, before ripping into Iggy Pop’s 1986 track ‘Shades’.
Not content to let it end there, Pop requested they play through a version of Joy Division’s ‘She’s Lost Control’, paying tribute to the former project of New Order members, despite screams from the crowd for him to ‘take it off’, and allow them to see him in all his famously shirtless glory.
Proving that the night was far from over, they were soon joined onstage by the Godmother of Punk, Patti Smith, as well as Philip Glass, and Alabama Shakes to play through a cover of Smith’s ‘People Have The Power’.
While we’re obviously stoked to be able to see such a phenomenal collaboration of breathtaking talent all in one place, we can’t help but feel jealous of all of those in attendence at the gig. Here’s hoping Aussie fans might see Patti Smith bring some of these friends over for her final Aussie shows next month, but sadly, we doubt she will.
