The Godfather of Punk has opened up about his future, with Iggy Pop revealing that he wants to make it to 80 just to spite “those who don’t like me”.

Earlier this year, Iggy Pop wrapped up his latest tour of Australia, performing in Melbourne on his 72nd birthday. While many musicians could only dream of doing what he does at that age, the rocker is far from done, gearing up to release a new album on September 8th.

However, despite his active nature, Pop has opened up about his mortality in a new interview with The New Yorker, revealing his plans for the future, and joking that “there’s some sort of betting pool out there on when I’m gonna croak.”

Touching on the topic of his longevity, the magazine noted how with The Stooges ceasing operations back in 2016, only Iggy Pop is the surviving member of the band’s founding lineup.

“It begins to make an impression,” the rock icon explained. “So you start to think, Well, O.K., what are my probabilities? And how would I feel if I was going to die tomorrow, and I looked at what I was doing with my life today?

“My only thing is, to spite those who don’t like me, I want to make eighty.”

Despite this though, the rocker still still has big plans for the future, noting that he has no desire to wrap up his wild antics onstage.

“I always wonder, if I stopped doing music, would I really start drinking tea instead of coffee, and, you know, brush my teeth more, and all that?” he mused. “Or would I become, like, an alcoholic depressive?

“Don’t tell me that I can’t strip off my shirt and go make a big primitive noise.”

Iggy Pop is set to release his 18th studio album, Free, on September 6th. Check out the title track below.
