Rising Newcastle indie band the Seabellies have just spent a month in Melbourne playing a swag of shows and unfortunately they have reportedly received a rather nasty farewell after leaving a show at the Workers Club in Fitzroy late on Saturday night (27th November). A group of thugs assaulted the band with belts and sticks near the venue in an apparently unprovoked attack, leaving several members with grazes and bruises. Photos appeared on Facebook showing members’ faces covered in blood and later stiches and plaster, with their Facebook update in the aftermath reading “Pub crawl cut short on Brunswick, got bashed By a group of lovely melbounites [sic] with sticks and belts. Trent scored a gash, steph has a few whip marks and we’re on our way to Get some stitches for Ed. 0.5 stars . Thanks to helpful bouncer at workers club!”
Writing on the Facebook page the next morning, the band said “We are little sore and sorry this morning. We still had the best time, regardless. We love you [Melbourne], it ain’t your fault. But to all the cowardly gangs everywhere: choosing small groups of innocent people to ambush, outnumber and hit with sticks & belts for sport …. you are disgusting gut.”
