Music Victoria Gives The Age Awards An Overhaul
Victoria’s peak music body and The Age are joining forces for a new partnership that gives an overhaul to the long-running The Age EG Awards. The new awards ceremony to recognises the state’s highest achievers in the field of music has been re-branded The Age Music Victoria Awards. The first ceremony under the new partnership will be held on Wedneysday 20th November 2013 at Billboard during Melbourne Music Week.
The Queen of Soul, Renée Geyer, will perform a 45 minute set at the ceremony as well as being inducted into The Age Music Victoria Hall of Fame, alongside The Mushroom Group mogul Michael Gudinski. They join previous Hall of Famers Weddings, Parties, Anything, Hoodoo Gurus, Died Pretty, Painters and Dockers, Kim Salmon, and TISM. The Age Music Victoria Awards will be presented by 3RRR with supporting partner SAE Institute. (via Music Victoria)
Cooking Vinyl Open For Business In Australia
Long running UK indie label Cooking Vinyl has opened an Australian office. Operating from Melbourne, the new office will be headed by Leigh Gruppetta, formerly of Shock Records, and fellow ex-Shock employee Stu Harvey. Cooking Vinyl Australia will sign both local and international artists as well and will work closely with the distributor, Caroline Label Services, across a ream of services through local and international labels such as BMG Rights, Dine Alone, Kemado, Lex, Mexican Summer, New Damage, Resist, and Stones Throw.
Founded in London by Martin Goldschmidt, Cooking Vinyl has played home to the likes of Billy Bragg, The Prodigy, Marilyn Manson, Underworld, and Amanda Palmer. Forthcoming releases for the indie label include Glasvegas, NYPC (New Young Pony Club), High Tension, Fur Trade, The Stepkids, Turin Brakes, Twin Forks, Dinosaur Bones, and The Flatliners. Shock Records Sign Deal With UK’s Kartel
Australian indie label Shock has announced a deal with UK music management and label services company Kartel. Shock will handle business Down Under for the London-based label service, which was founded in 2003. The deal will see Kartel’s growing roster brought to Australia, via Shock, including Filthy Boy (Stranger Records), The Drowning Men, Teitur and To Kill A King – all who have albums scheduled for release later this year. Kartel work with a diverse number of acclaimed labels including Xtra Mile Recordings (Frank Turner, Against Me!) and Borstal Beat Records – the newly created label of legendary punk ensemble Flogging Molly. Harmony Join Poison City Roster
Poison City Records has expanded its artist roster with the signing of Melbourne mood-makers Harmony and will release the band’s forthcoming second studio album, Carpetbombing, in early 2014. The news arrives as the group are set to head out on a national tour a support for The Drones. Harmony join the likes of The Bennies, The Smith Street Band, and Lincoln Le Fevre. (via Poison City)
Footstomp Music Expands, Signs Eden Mullholland
New Zealand-bred, Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Eden Mullholland has joined the roster of management company Footstomp Music. The deal was inked ahead of this week’s BIGSOUND industry conference, and though the two parties have worked together previously, the new inked deal officially sees Mullholland joining Graham Ashton and his team. “Eden Mulholland is one of the most fearless artists I have come across in a very long time,” Footstomp’s Graham Ashton said of the signing. “Footstomp have been working with Eden in a project management capacity for four years and we love him unconditionally.” (via The Music)
