Jack White has become the latest artist to share a tribute to late guitarist Dick Dale, posting a heartfelt message to the musician on Instagram.

Yesterday, the world of music was shocked to learn of the death of surf-rock pioneer Dick Dale.

Passing away at the age of 81, Dale had been performing for close to 60 years, keeping an exhaustive touring schedule up until his passing due to a need to pay exorbitant medical bills.

Despite this, Dale had been a highly-influential guitarist, being nominated for Grammys and even having his iconic track ‘Misirlou’ showing up on the soundtrack to Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction.

Now, modern-day guitar hero Jack White has shared his own tribute to Dick Dale, calling him a “unique innovator” of the guitar, and a strong influence on his own musical career

“It is saddening to hear of the passing of the incredible guitar player Dick Dale,” Jack White wrote on Instagram.

“I spent many moments learning his massive reverbed guitar licks in my bedroom, and still enjoy playing his song ‘Nitro’ whenever I can. Sadly, I never got to meet him.”

“A unique innovator of the guitar with pick melting style and swagger for miles,” he continued. “I can remember traveling up to Pontiac from Detroit by myself to watch him play when I was sixteen.”

“That upside down gold sparkle Fender of his needs to be hung up some place special.”

Jack White is set to make his return to Australia next month when he visits with his band The Saboteurs (or The Raconteurs, if you’re not a local) as part of Bluesfest’s 30th anniversary.
