Famed New York dance-punk group LCD Soundsystem reformed in 2015 after a few years off. Some fans were cynical, especially since frontman James Murphy had made such a big deal about the group’s initial disbandment, but James Murphy had now revealed the group’s reformation can be, in part, attributed to the late David Bowie.
As NME reports, James Murphy has spoken to Lauren Laverne on the BBC’s 6 Music, and during the interview, he has revealed none other than David Bowie helped to convince him to reform the band. “I spent a good amount of time with David Bowie, and I was talking about getting the band back together,” Murphy said. “He said ‘does it make you uncomfortable?’ I said ‘yeah’, and he said ‘good, it should, it should make you feel uncomfortable’.”
James Murphy had become friends with Bowie while spending large amount of time with him during his final years, having remixed Bowie’s ‘Love Is Lost’, and producing Arcade Fire’s ‘Reflektor’, which featured Bowie on guest vocals.
James Murphy also revealed that he and the late rock star even came close to recording an album together prior to Bowie’s untimely death. “I reached out to David and said, ‘I’d love to do a record just me and you’,” Murphy said. “He said, ‘It’s funny you mention that, please look me up when you get back to New York'”. Murphy says that the pair did meet up in New York, but by this point, Bowie had already begun work on what would become his final project, Blackstar.
