Casey Affleck has admitted what many of us have been suspecting all along – his documentary about Joaquin Phoenix is a fake. The film, entitled I’m Still Here, follows Phoenix’s career as he announced his retirement from acting and the launch of a much derided rap career. Affleck has confessed to the New York Times that the whole thing was a stunt – including Phoenix’s now legendary awkward appearance on the David Letterman Show. Calling it the ‘performance of his career’, Affleck says he even faked home movies of Phoenix’s childhood. He says he was having a crack at ‘gonzo film making’ rather than trying to trick people. The Fourth Estate – aka the media – don’t like having stunts pulled on them and can infamously turn nasty on people who do. However, even if many people had their doubts on the whole film anyway, it’s still a pretty good stunt. Hats off to them both.
