Welshman John Cale of The Velvet Underground and Salford, Greater Manchester-born Graham Nash of Crosby, Stills & Nash have both been revealed as recipients of Liz Windsor’s Order of the British Empire in a list announced for the official Queen’s Birthday. Both notorious drug fiends during the 60s and 70s, they’ve managed to scrub up well enough to make the trip to Buckingham Palace to have their medals pinned on their shirts. After he was kicked out of the Velvet Underground by Lou Reed, Cale went on to have a successful career as a solo artist and producer of albums by Nico, Patti Smith and the Happy Mondays, while Nash still plays with CSN and has also had an acclaimed career as a photographer.
