If you haven’t heard or seen Dirt Farmer yet, you’re either living under a rock, or you’re just… not really that cool. Hailing from Melbourne, this Velvet Underground inspired rock n’ roll outfit may only be a year or so old, but they’re already generating a lot of interest in the industry, their tight debut single ‘Johnny Marble’, from the upcoming EP Gladstone Street Circus, being hand selected to appear on the latest Triple J Unearthed podcast, as well as remaining on the Unearthed charts for weeks.
Crisp, laidback guitars mask a darker lyrical theme, which begins to show through more and more as the song goes on, reaching its apex when the harmonica is brought in. Singer Stuart Barlow’s vocals are perfect and drifty the whole way through, complimenting the instrumentation seamlessly. This is an outstanding first single from a relatively new band, and if this is what they’re coming up with while they’re still so new, you’d be wise to check them out now, so that you can tell your friends that you were with them since the beginning.
