Iceland has been forced to temporarily shut down popular tourist destination, Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon, and Justin Bieber is to blame.

In a report published on CNN Travel, the Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon, located almost 250km east of capital city Reykjavik, will be closed until June. The canyon has been forced to close due to damage caused by excessive foot traffic.

Daníel Freyr Jónsson, of the Environment Agency of Iceland, believes that Bieber is in part responsible for the unsustainable level of tourism to the attraction. Jónsson has claimed that the music video for Bieber’s 2015 track ‘I’ll Show You’ spurred a spike in the canyon’s popularity.

“This canyon was somewhat unknown,”  Jónsson shared in an interview with Lonely Planet. “But I think Icelanders have known about it a lot longer. The great increase in foot traffic began after Bieber came. There has been an increase of 50 per cent to 80 per cent between 2016, 2017 and 2018.”

The ‘I’ll Show You’ music video features exquisitely shot footage of Justin Bieber running and skateboarding throughout Iceland. The video has been viewed over 440 million times on YouTube. We imagine that the devastatingly beautiful scenery has encouraged both Beliebers looking to visit the holy ground of their lord and saviour Justin Bieber and your everyday travel bloggers to flood the landmark.

Earlier today, Justin Bieber announced that he would be taking a break from making music. Bieber cited his need to focus on his mental health and his family as his reason to take a step back from the music world. Quite frankly, this canyon palaver proves that this planet does not have the resources it requires to sustain the divine power of the Biebs. Perhaps a hiatus from the Biebs is what this planet needs to rejuvenate.
